The Child Development Team

Compassionate and Considerate Psychiatrists and Psychologist in Hong Kong

The CDT encompasses a range of services that focus on children, teenagers, and their parents. The CDT is the largest multi-disciplinary child development team available to English-speakers in Hong Kong. Each member is an experienced and fully qualified professional in their field who has been carefully picked to complement the services the team offers.

In addition to our medical doctors who specialize in pediatrics, endocrinology and childhood development, we offer psychological, psychiatric, speech, educational, occupational and dietary support. Our team members collaborate with one another, and provide a unique ‘one-stop-shop’ for families who need additional support for themselves, their children, and their teenagers. In addition to working with families, the CDT frequently provides schools with professional development on a range of neurological, educational, social, emotional, and behavioral topics.

Child psychological / psycho-educational assessments

A pediatric psychologist offers comprehensive psychological and psycho-educational assessments to help teachers, parents, and patients understand more about their strengths and weaknesses. Our assessments are strength-based, and families will usually find the experience empowering and positive. Through our comprehensive assessments, our psychologists are able to determine whether or not there is an underlying difficulty impeding a child’s ability to access school curriculums or reach their full potential. In addition, our assessments can assist educators in understanding more about their students and how to facilitate their learning.

The CDT has the largest test library available in Hong Kong, allowing us to pinpoint and provide specific recommendations to parents and schools. The CDT’s assessments, with parental permission, value the involvement of the child’s school and our psychologists often visit or work directly with school personnel to ensure that the student and school have the necessary information and strategies to facilitate learning. Our psychologists also ensure that recommendations are actually put into place and will provide follow-up care with both the school and parents.

Pediatric therapeutic and psychiatric and psychological services

Children, teenagers, and their parents are facing increasing amounts of stress and pressure to succeed in school. Sometimes, families are confronted with difficult or traumatic experiences that require additional support from a trained pediatric psychologist. The CDT offers a full range of therapeutic services to cater for most situations. Each child psychologist in our team specializes in different areas and offers therapy through different, research-based, therapeutic techniques to guarantee that your family receives the appropriate level of support taking into account both social/cultural circumstances and personality traits. Dr. Barry Connell, a western trained and educated psychiatrist in Hong Kong, oversees complex cases and collaborates with our counselors, pediatricians and psychologists to prescribe medication where needed.

Child educational and behavioral services

Our counselors, child psychiatrists, psychologist and teacher’s offer a range of programs that support a student’s organizational and executive functioning needs. Our pediatric team was one of the first to offer social thinking programs and behavioral programs in Hong Kong and continues to run such programs throughout the year. We provide programs that positively and proactively support parents to better manage their children and teenagers. The CDT’s behavioral specialists offer in-house support that involves school and home visits in order to tailor-make programs and plans to support individual families.
